Festival Director, Tasveer-SSAFF-Kiran Dhillon on Tahmina’s Radio Show 10/11/16 at 10am PST

Tahmina Watson Showcard-color-NFWe are delighted to announce that Tasveer’s Festival Director of the 11th Seattle South Asian Film Festival (SSAFF) Kiran Dhillon will be on Tahmina’s radio show “Immigration With Tahmina”  on Desi 1250 am this Tuesday October 11th at 10am PST.  Over the years, SSAFF has become an integral part of our diverse community. Many of us immigrants have found that a void is filled by the new and exciting movies brought to us by Tasveer. The festival starts this Friday on October 14th to October 23rd.  Kiran will join us to talk about the story of Tasveer and how it is intertwined with immigration and immigrant lives. I will remind readers that I first watched For Here or To Go? at this very film festival last year!kiran-dhillon

Festival Director Kiran Dhillon started volunteering with SSAFF in 2009, progressing from Ticket Collector that first year (which remains one of her favorite jobs!) to Director in 2015 and 2016. Over the years she has coordinated volunteers, worked on marketing and publicity efforts, managed the festival, helped with sponsorships and performed many other role.

Before SSAFF, Kiran’s only exposure to South Asian films was the somewhat unreal world of Bollywood. By presenting films on topics that are sometimes considered taboo in South Asian culture—such as the experiences of the LGBTQ community, women’s empowerment and sexuality—SSAFF has shown Kiran how the cinema
can be a powerful tool to help explore various personal, cultural and political issues, including immigration. Through SSAFF, she’s realized the power of activism through film.

Kiran recently became a US citizen herself and will share her story with us on air! I know I and many of you will absolutely relate to it!

We are also fortunate to have City of Seattle’s new Citizenship Program and Policy Specialist Christine Guros join us briefly to talk about the upcoming Citizenship Day on October 15th! It is expected to be a busy day and if you don’t get there early, you may miss out! So tune in to learn where and when to turn up!

Be sure to tune into this exciting episode at 10 am on October 11th on Desi 1250 AM.  You can tune into your radio in the greater Seattle area at 1250 AM or listen online at http://www.desi1250am.com/.  You can download the Desi 1250am app from the app store.
