Today the Supreme Court ruled that The Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional and same-sex marriages must be recognized. This will have far reaching effects! Now same-sex couples can get married all over the US!
But what does it mean for immigration? It means that a gay or lesbian married couple will be recognized in immigration law and the US spouse can now apply for the foreign spouse’s green card!
This is indeed a historic day. I sit at the Hilton Hotel in San Francisco where the annual American Immigration Lawyers Association is holding its annual conference. No doubt the conference will cover this issue and I will update all my readers in due course.
In the meantime, if you have a same-sex partner who is a citizen of another country and were feeling at a loss what to do – well, your wait is over!
Thank you to the Supreme Court of the United States!
