Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Dept. of Homeland Security announced her resignation today. She will become president of the University of California system. As you may recall, two weeks ago it was announced that USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas would be promoted to Deputy Secretary of DHS. I believe both Napolitano and Mayorkas made a good team and have accomplished many good things for USCIS. In this sudden unexpected change, I will be staying tuned for who fills their big shoes. This is an important time in US immigration history with real potential of comprehensive immigration reform. If there is the passage of CIR, so many new processes, procedures, forms, protocols will have to be instituted, that competent leadership will be crucial. Perhaps Director Mayorkas will have a double promotion. I am glad he is not leaving DHS so his leadership will apply to USCIS.
