The Startup Visa: The Book, The Podcast and Now the Bill (The LIKE Act)

“Tahmina Watson has produced an excellent book on the startup visa that should be read by policymakers, entrepreneurs and others attempting to navigate and improve America’s often challenging legal immigration system.”

The Startup Visa, 2nd edition book, and podcast series- your one-stop for all your advocacy tools but also a helpful guide for entrepreneurs! My new book, foreword written by Techstars co-founder Brad Feld holds strong at #1 in many categories! Thank you to everyone who has gotten the book. I hope you will share this widely, the launch sale is held at 99 cents for the ebook and 50% paperback.
Why is this moment important? When I started to write this book in January 2021, I didn’t know when it would be published and how things would unfold. But I diligently woke up at 5 am every day to ensure my day job of lawyering and life of mothering would not be affected. As the manuscript came together in May 2021, the Biden administration revived the International Entrepreneur Rule. I had to go back to the book to make more edits. As the EB5 program came to halt in June with other judicial changes, I had to go back to the book and edit some more. There were other changes along the way too. I will write about the journey of the book sometime but know that writing a book like this with constant changes, takes a lot of time, dedication, and hard work. I will forever be grateful to my editors Lornet Turnbull and Caroline Doughty for their incredible patience with every edit that had to be made.

As we were getting to publish, Congress held a hearing on this very topic! On July 13th, the House Judiciary Committee, led by Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren specially discussed the Startup Visa! Such a hearing has not happened in a long time! But the book was not ready to ship. They graciously accepted the manuscript and statement on the record. Now this book made it into Congress and will have an actual impact on the law- just as I had intended!

The book finally came out on July 20th & immediately hit number 1 in 11 categories and hovered in the top 10 in many others. And, that day, Above the Law published my article about why I wrote this book with so much urgency. (Links will be in the comments).

I could not have predicted that a new bill would be introduced by Congress just 6 days later! On Monday this week, the LIKE Act, aka, the new Startup Visa bill, is the latest iteration of a startup visa and is a good one! Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren has definitely worked closely with the community and now it is time for the community to step up.

While many of you know we need a startup visa from your own perspective, you need to know why the immigration laws need to change, how immigrants have shaped America This book is detailed and comprehensive, yet easy to read and not too long. Read it, share it, use it, and please leave a review on Amazon.
