Moving? Here’s How to File Form AR-11 with USCIS

Moving is a busy time. Between unpacking boxes, updating your utilities, and settling into a new routine, it’s easy to overlook a few important tasks.

If you’re not a U.S. citizen, one of those tasks should be updating your address with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

Most noncitizens are required by law to report a new residential address to USCIS within 10 calendar days of moving. Fortunately, the process is straightforward and can usually be completed online in just a few minutes.

Taking care of this simple step can help you avoid missed notices, unnecessary delays, and potential issues with your immigration case.

Who Should File Form AR-11?

Most non-U.S. citizens living in the United States are required to report a change of address. This generally includes:

  • Green card holders
  • Individuals with work or other temporary visas
  • International students
  • People with pending immigration applications or petitions

Some exceptions apply. If you’re unsure whether this requirement applies to your situation, it’s worth speaking with an immigration attorney before making assumptions.

Why Updating Your Address Matters

USCIS communicates with applicants primarily by mail. That means important documents are sent to the address they have on file.

These notices may include:

  • Biometrics appointment notices
  • Interview appointments
  • Requests for additional evidence
  • Approval notices
  • Employment Authorization Documents (work permits)
  • Other updates related to your immigration case

If USCIS sends these documents to an old address, you may miss important deadlines or appointments. As a result, your application could be delayed or require additional steps to resolve.

In addition, federal law requires most noncitizens to report a change of address. Failing to do so may carry legal consequences, including fines, imprisonment, or, in certain circumstances, removal (deportation).

Filing Form AR-11 Is Easier Than You Might Think

The quickest and easiest way to update your address is through the USCIS online Change of Address system. Filing Form AR-11 is free, and most people can complete the process in just a few minutes.

We strongly encourage you to submit your change of address through a USCIS online account as soon as you move. If you don’t already have an account, you can create one here:

Before you begin, it’s helpful to have:

  • Your Alien Registration Number (A-Number), if you have one
  • Your previous address
  • Your new address
  • Receipt numbers for any pending USCIS applications

Once you’re ready, you can submit your address change through the official USCIS Change of Address page:

One important reminder: updating your address with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) does not update your records with USCIS. Even if you’ve arranged mail forwarding, you must still notify USCIS separately by filing Form AR-11.
